All Celebrations for Darwin, Science and Humanity to take place on/or near February 12th, 2009, will be placed below.

This will be the big year — Darwin's 200th birthday, to be celebrated by the GLOBAL community as a toast to the common good of all humanity. We will all want to develop events to Celebrate Darwin, Science and Humanity and come together as one human family in appreciation of verifiable knowledge that has been acquired solely through human curiosity and ingenuity. Scientific knowledge has been of great value to all of us.

By 2009 it is our hope that the Celebration of Science and Humanity will be so well established that DURING THE REMANDER OF THE YEAR we will all want to continue to work to make February the 12th a International day to recognize Verifiable Scientific Knowledge and to appreciate the connection of Humankind to the acquisition of this knowledge. One experiences an intellectual freedom of understanding by realizing that all living things on earth have a common evolutionary history that connects us all. So it is our expectation that we will all continue to work together to expand the CELEBRATION OF DARWIN, SCIENCE AND HUMANITY!

Charles Darwin University (Australia), in partnership with the Northern Territory Government and the City of Darwin is currently planning a number of events in 2009 to commemorate Charles Darwin’s birthday and achievements. These events aim to raise awareness of who Charles Darwin was, what he achieved and how his legacy is relevant to the present day Northern Territory, both in the academic and broader community. The programme that is developed will be interdisciplinary and will include activities around the natural sciences, the creative arts and humanities, philosophy, religion and the social sciences. For an entire day, guests on board ALTA, PARRANDA, EVOLUTION and GRACE Galapagos cruises will take a step back in time to the days of Charles Darwin. On board all our Galapagos ships, guests will enjoy briefings and presentations on the life of Charles Darwin and his theory on evolution. It will be an active, life-seeing account on the life of this magnificent scientist where guests will be able to see and witness precisely the same animals and events that Darwin himself witnessed over 2 centuries ago.

Title: THE CHARLES DARWIN THEATRE PROJECT ( Public )

2009 is the bi-centenary of the birth of Charles Darwin. To commemorate this event, a New Zealand theatre company is preparing to produce a play about Darwin which will run in conjunction with public debates and lectures organised by the Royal Society of New Zealand.

It is planned that the Wellington performances will take place in Te Papa at the beginning of 2009, traveling to other main cities in the following weeks: Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Napier, Nelson, Christchurch and Dunedin.

The play will give an "essentialised" picture of Darwin's life, showing in dramatic form much that is unknown by most people and that needs to be understood for anyone to make an informed judgment concerning Darwin's theory. The play will be aimed at all who are interested in the origin and consequences of his theory and will not take sides but let individual characters give the different sides of the debate. A depiction of the complex forces working in Darwin over the twenty years in which he held back speaking out about his theory makes for a fascinating human study. His own gradual loss of faith in religion is contrasted with the Christian belief of his wife, Emma. Audiences will come out of the play knowing much more about Darwin the man and the origin of his theory and greatly stimulated to think over the pros and cons of the theory as it relates to our own times.

The producers of the play are glad to hear of any interest among the science community for hosting debates or from companies willing to be sponsors to individual performances or events surrounding the play.

In celebration of Charles Darwin's 200th birthday and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his work, On the Origin of Species, we are sponsoring a symposium on evolution.
Our presenters are:
Randy Moore, University of Minnesota, Jack Horner, Montana State University, Rob Knight, University of Colorado, Lisa Steiner, MIT, Scott Gilbert, Swarthmore College and Don Johanson, Arizona State University. In addition to the seminars that will be presented from the above speakers, we plan on having a poster session open to registration by students and faculty that wish to actively participate. Title: The Codex & The Helix: Book Arts Exploring Evolution ( Public )

Gonzaga University's Foley Center Library is now accepting submissions of original artists' books that faithfully portray the science behind evolution and/or the political and social history of evolutionary theory in an artistic codex, scroll, volvelle, or other book arts form. The entries will be evaluated by a diverse panel of judges (including biologists, artists, and librarians), and selected submissions will be installed in Foley Special Collections as part of The Codex & The Helix: Book Arts Exploring Evolution. Winning entries and the legacy of Darwin will be celebrated at a reception on February 12, 2009. Entries must be postmarked by October 31, 2008.
