All Celebrations for Darwin, Science, and Humanity to take place on/or near February 12th, 2010, will be placed below.

Darwin and Lincoln's Bicentennials in 2009 will not be the end of Darwin Day. Working in collaboration with other scientific organizations, we will continue to promote informal public education about aspects of evolution. Evolution has been missing from America's teaching of science, and we will continue to supplement the deficient curricula with fun Events that celebrate Science and Humanity.

Darwin Day is an international celebration of science and humanity. In celebration, Leaders in Free Thought would like to invite you to come watch ''The Genius of Charles Darwin''.

Charles Darwin’s insight into how life evolved, in the ''Origin of Species'', has been the subject of debate ever since it was published in 1859, even as every detail of the fossil record provides increasing evidence for Darwin’s ideas. The theory of evolution has frequently been misunderstood by the public, and often misrepresented as justifying racist attitudes.

'The Genius of Charles Darwin'' considers the moral questions raised by the theory of evolution and describes how selfless behavior and altruism are an essential strategy for human survival and part of evolution itself.

The Darwin Day celebration expresses gratitude for the enormous benefits that scientific knowledge has contributed to the advancement of humanity. This celebration recognizes that science is an international language accessible to all individuals and societies, and acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity.

Title: Inherit the Wind - Ethics and the Theater ( Public )

New York Society for Ethical Culture presents a staged reading of "Inherit the Wind" as part of their Ethics and the Theater series. Following the performance, participate in a group discussion of the play's ethical issues. Suggested donation $5.

Inherit the Wind, by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. A courtroom drama based on the historical Scopes “monkey” trial, Inherit the Wind pits two oratorical giants – Henry Drummond, the character representing Clarence Darrow, and Matthew Harrison Brady, as William Jennings Bryan – against one another in a debate over evolution and Darwinism. Ironically, the authors intended their play to be a parable about McCarthyism, never dreaming that their ostensible subject, religious fundamentalism, would displace their implied one, anti-Communism, as a prime issue dividing the country and threatening free thought. Still, their portrayal of unquestioning faith versus creative doubt and individuals challenging ignorance and injustice is timely in any era.
