Over 150 newspapers and other news outlets carried public articles about Darwin Day in 2006 and also in 2007, so it will be easier to get public attention.

In February each year, scientific organisations and people around the world celebrate Darwin Day to recognise Charles Darwin’s contribution to natural science…and the Australian Museum is no exception!

Darwin’s theory of evolution touches every branch of biology and can make us reconsider how we should address conservation issues. At this special event, Ecologist and evolutionary biologist Rick Shine, winner of this year’s Botanic Gardens Eureka Prize for Biodiversity Research, will describe new results from his team’s studies on the invasion of cane toads in tropical Australia.

Their research has revealed rapid evolutionary change in both the toads themselves and in predators that die when they try to eat toxic toads. Such changes may mean the long-term ecological impact of cane toads are far less severe than expected from the short-term impact when they invade an area.

Special Guest Lecturer Dr. Don Henderson (Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology) will present a talk on biomechanics in conjunction with the UofA Palaeontological Society's Silent Auction (proceeds of which will be put towards the Second Biannual UofAPS Symposium in March 2008).

The UofAPS is the undergrad, graduate, and faculty association at the University of Alberta for those with an interest in palaeontology, evolution, and systematics.

The Oakville Humanist Community is delighted to present "Belief, Behavior and the Brain; An Evolving Story", a free public talk by Dr Robert Buckman, oncologist, television personality, and President Emeritus of the Humanist Association of Canada. The event will take place on Thursday, Feb 8, in the South Atrium of the Oakville Town Hall. Doors will open at 6:30 pm and seating is strictly first come first served. The program will begin at 7 pm.

There will opportunities for book signing by Dr Buckman after the talk. Please note that all book purchases must be in cash.

That's another way of asking "What does it mean to be human?" We are both very similar to, and different from our closest primate relatives. By examining those similarities and differences, we can learn about ourselves as we are now, and about how we became human. Understanding how we differ from Chimps is a good way to start understanding who we are.

On both M/V Santa Cruz and Yacht Isabela II in the Galápagos Islands, we will have special lectures on Darwin's Life and particular attention to his time while in Galapagos. Wake up call on Feb 12 will have a solid Darwinian message. All printed materials throughout this week will include a Darwin message. Bulletin board will hold a Darwin Day Celebration poster, including some of Darwin's most celebrated quotes. Our ship's itineraries include all islands that Darwin visited back in 1835.

Hungary appears for the first time on the map of Darwin Day celebrations, as the recently formed Hungarian Skeptic Society, as one of its first projects, started promoting Darwin Day in Hungary. The Society has started the official page of Hungarian celebrations (www.darwinnap.hu) which features:
- list of events and celebrations in Hungary,
- articles on evolution and Darwin,
- related quotes,
- list of recommended books,
- FAQ on evolution,
- promo material and goodies to download,
- and a collection of ideas to celebrate the event.

Our introduction material and invitation for celebration has been sent to over 1000 schools, libraries, and community centres, and our press material has been sent to numerous online and offline media organizations. Expectations are moderate for the first year of celebrations, but the start is promising. All resulting events that we know of will be added to the event registry of darwinday.org as a separate entry.
