II World Summit on Evolution ( Public )
Date and Time: 2009-08-23 19:30:00

Event Website: http://wse2.usfq.edu.ec/

Activities:
The Second World Summit on Evolution (WSE) will convene 24-27 August 2009 in the Galapagos Islands. With their historical significance in the development of the evolutionary theory, the Galapagos Islands offer an unparalleled venue to celebrate Darwin's bicentennial. The summit will bring together experts and students from widely different areas of evolutionary biology that rarely have the chance to meet. The focus will be on recent research and new advances in our understanding of evolution and the diversity of life. One session will focus in directly on containing the spread of creationism and intelligent design while improving the public’s understanding of evolution throughout the Americas and elsewhere. Unlike the First WSE in 2005, there will be a mix of invited speakers and submitted talks.

The summit will also include the first meeting of the Sociedad Iberoamericana de Biologia Evolutiva (SIBE). SIBE will be the first truly international forum that can lead to the establishment of academic and intellectual bonds between the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking specialists in evolutionary biology.

The Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), Ecuador, will again host the WSE and the first meeting of the SIBE on its Galapagos campus. This campus is located on the Island of San Cristobal and was established in 2002. This Summit is planned as part of a broader program designed to teach evolution to students and the general public that will take place throughout the year in mainland Ecuador.

Structure of conference

This four-day conference will consist of 40-minute talks by invited speakers, as well 15-minute submitted talks. There will also be poster sessions. Professors, post-docs, and students from throughout the world will be able to submit abstracts for talks or posters. This conference will include 250 participants; thirty speakers and chairs will be invited.
On the third day, conference participants will be able to attend guided tours of the island. Both terrestrial and marine environments will be visited.

THE CHARLES DARWIN THEATRE PROJECT ( Public )
Date and Time: 2009-02-12 19:00:00

Activities:
2009 is the bi-centenary of the birth of Charles Darwin. To commemorate this event, a New Zealand theatre company is preparing to produce a play about Darwin which will run in conjunction with public debates and lectures organised by the Royal Society of New Zealand.

It is planned that the Wellington performances will take place in Te Papa at the beginning of 2009, traveling to other main cities in the following weeks: Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Napier, Nelson, Christchurch and Dunedin.

The play will give an "essentialised" picture of Darwin's life, showing in dramatic form much that is unknown by most people and that needs to be understood for anyone to make an informed judgment concerning Darwin's theory. The play will be aimed at all who are interested in the origin and consequences of his theory and will not take sides but let individual characters give the different sides of the debate. A depiction of the complex forces working in Darwin over the twenty years in which he held back speaking out about his theory makes for a fascinating human study. His own gradual loss of faith in religion is contrasted with the Christian belief of his wife, Emma. Audiences will come out of the play knowing much more about Darwin the man and the origin of his theory and greatly stimulated to think over the pros and cons of the theory as it relates to our own times.

The producers of the play are glad to hear of any interest among the science community for hosting debates or from companies willing to be sponsors to individual performances or events surrounding the play.

The Evolution of Evolution: Using Synthetic Systems to Explain N ( Public )
Date and Time: 2009-02-12 13:15:00

Event Website: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/lhl/lhlpub_spring09/08_120209

Activities:
The second law of thermodynamics states that a natural system will with time become increasingly random. There are, however, two kinds of natural system: those that follow this law and those that don’t. Living systems are of the second kind. Unlike the waves on the surface of the North Sea or an avalanche tumbling down the side of Ben Nevis, living structures ‘have a purpose’ … to survive, to invert the relentless move towards randomness – at least for a while. The brain is arguably the most complicated of these and thus one of the most difficult to describe. What is more, if we are to explain the brain we must first understand the code hidden in its described structure. Here, in celebration of Darwin’s ‘Origin of the Species’, we will talk about what this code might be and how it evolved … but not in the real world. Instead we will talk about the evolution of virtual agents in synthetic worlds and how this may help explain how natural brains halt the perpetual walk to randomness.
