After February 12, 2006 the effort to include additional languages on this website will continue and in addition, we will seek individuals or organizations in each of the countries where events have been held to become affiliates of Darwinday.org, within their countries. They will be encouraged to translate more of our website information into their language and to add appropriate information of their own, including the recrutment of prominent Scientists, Educators, Philosophers, and Writers from within those jurisdictions. We expect to be able to assist them in taking responsibility for the expansion of the Celebration by providing them with email lists and other materials. Video re-enactment of the famous stoush between Bishop Wilberforce and Thomas Huxley at the 1860 meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Talks by Dr Darren Curnoe UNSW and Prof Stephen Boyden ANU followed by questions and discussion. They will talk about the branch of the evolutionary tree that led to modern humans. Dr Curnoe's is entitled Making Peace with Nature and Prof Boyden is entitled the biology of civilisation - the difficulties that arise from our biology underpinning civilisation. This event coordinates with another evening event organised by the Australian Museum Society (TAMS). It will touch on "Intelligent Design" in passing.

Celebrate Darwin Day with Dr. Sally Otto, UBC Professor of Biology and expert in the evolution of sex and mating systems. Dr. Otto’s main area of expertise is theoretical models of evolution that study how populations change over time. The aim of this work is to identify when and whether particular evolutionary transitions are possible. Evolution plays such a central role in our contemporary understanding of life on this planet that it is only fitting to mark the birthday of the author of The Origin of Species.

The Philosophy Students' Union (PSU) of the University of Victoria is sponsoring this somewhat whimsical celebration of Darwin Day on the UVic Campus. On the lighter side, we will be singing Darwin carols of our own composition, exchanging Darwin cards, displaying an evolution tree (a wooden frame on which we will hang, as ornaments, representative sections of plants according to their evolutionary branches), and feature as well a sombre (but somehow convivial) Charles Darwin to spread wisdom, scientific information, and (perhaps) good cheer for the season.

On the more serious side, we will also have a table in the Student Union Building at which we will discuss some details of Darwin's life and work and explain to critics why evolutionary theory is by far the most rational stance to take regarding the origins of life.

A Darwin-themed party will follow. On Darwin Day itself (Sunday, February 12th), we are planning a similar celebration in downtown Victoria, for the general public.

Dr Kassen is known internationally for his integrative approach to the study of biodiversity and has helped to pioneer the use of microbial systems as experimental models for understanding the evolutionary and ecological mechanisms underlying patterns of biodiversity in nature. Dr Kassen’s recent work focuses on the properties of new mutations affecting fitness and suggests that it may be possible to predict the “next evolutionary move” of a population when faced with a novel environmental stress.

Pour une première année, le Centre de Conservation de la Biodiversité Boréale / Zoo sauvage de St-Félicien, vous invite à venir célébrer l’anniversaire de Charles Darwin, samedi le 11 février 2006. Ainsi, le CCBB se joint à des dizaines d’organisations à travers le monde pour souligner l’anniversaire de Darwin et de ses travaux scientifiques.

Que vous soyez professeur, étudiant ou tout simplement amant de la nature, la journée s’adresse à vous. Vous serez d’abord invité à visiter le magnifique site du Zoo sauvage pour ensuite être convié à assister et participer aux conférences. Sur le site, vous observerez des animaux de la Boréalie et pourrez, entre autres, constater l’efficacité de leurs adaptations au climat nordique, résultat de milliers d’années d’évolution. Votre journée se conclura par deux conférences par des passionnés de l’Évolution ! Tout d’abord une présentation de Darwin par Robert Loiselle de l’UQAC, suivi d’un échange entre Cyrille Barrette, professeur à l’université Laval et auteur d’un livre sur la Sélection Naturelle, et du public. Préparez vos questions !

15:00 Conférence du Dr Robert Loiselle de l’UQAC : « Visite de Down House, à la source du darwinisme ». M. Loiselle a enseigné le cours d’évolution à l’UQAC pendant 10 ans et a eu le plaisir de visiter la maison de Darwin en Angleterre en 2005.

16:00 Thé et biscottes à l’anglaise.

16:15 Conférence de type échange libre entre le Dr Cyrille Barrette et les participants : « Entretien avec un passionné de l'évolution ». Le Dr Barrette enseigne l’évolution à l’université Laval et est l’auteur du livre : Le miroir du monde, Évolution par sélection naturelle et mystère de la nature humaine. Il est aussi membre du comité scientifique du CCBB. M. Barrette s’entretiendra avec le public de sujets variés : l'origine de la vie, l'origine de l'homme, la nature animale versus la nature humaine, la vie extra-terrestre, le créationnisme (intelligent design), etc. Les visiteurs sont invités à préparer leurs questions pour M. Barrette.

The public is invited to the first “Darwin Day celebration” at the Centre for the conservation of the boreal biodiversity/ Wild zoo of St-Felicien. The celebration will be held Saturday 11th, 2006. Visitors will have the chance to visit the zoo before assisting to two conferences by university professors. The Wild zoo of St-Felicien offers a unique way of observing evolution in action: animals of the boreal forest with effective adaptations to a cold climate, gained through thousands of years of evolution. Every one is welcome!
